HAPPY SPRING!

It's never too early to plan for the future, and as always, your Section is looking forward.  From committee membership to Executive Council seats, now is the time to consider, and your opportunity to decide, how you want to make a difference in the practice of Family Law in Florida.
If you're ready to step up to the responsibility of Section leadership, then you'll be interested to know that the Nomination Committee of The Florida Bar Family Law Section is now accepting applications for positions on the Executive Council and for Secretary of the Council for the 2009-2010 Bar year.  Nomination forms  and requirements (deadline is April 6) are available on the Family Law Section website at: http://www.familylawfla.org/executive/
Otherwise, an abundance of opportunities await you in Committee work.  Whether you're already a member of a Committee or this will be your first time, be sure to complete your 2009-2010 Committee preference form now.

Regardless of whether you decide to become an official Committee member or seek nomination to a higher position within the Section, you can still get involved and contribute to the work of the Section in some way.   Contact Section Chair, Scott Rubin, or one of our  Membership chairs and find out how.

DID YOU KNOW?

Recent changes to Florida Prepaid College Plan rules may now make them harder to cancel and thus more likely to be there when a child actually needs it.

Section supporter, Sen. Ted Deutch, D-Boca Raton, sought the rule change after the matter was brought to his attention by one of his constituents whose ex-husband cashed out their son's plan over her protests because it was only in  his name.  Now, prepaid plans bought after Feb. 1 will require both the purchaser and any listed survivor to agree before a plan can be cashed out if done so before the child goes to college.

For those who bought a prepaid plan before Feb. 1, a survivor can be added and request made to give that person a right of refusal for any plan cancellations or changes.  But, anyone who wants sole control of the plan can still choose not to list a survivor.
